Song
of Love and Loss (in memoriam Melanie Gold) was commissioned by
the
Hilliard Ensemble, to whom it is dedicated. The music is a modern approach
to the mediaeval technique of organum, parallel movement between voices. The
piece was written in Winter of 2004-05. The text consists entirely of
vocalise and repetitions of a single word, ahava, the Hebrew word for love.
Melanie Gold was a vivacious and enthusiastic supporter of Vancouver's
visual arts community, President of the Canadian Crafts Museum, and a dear
friend.
