Scarlattiana is a transcription for classical orchestra of the
Domenico Scarlatti Keyboard Sonata in F# minor K 25. The piece is dedicated to
Denise Ball, who brought this, her favourite Scarlatti Sonata, to my attention
while I was Composer-in-Residence for the Vancouver Symphony. Scarlattiana was
first performed by the VSO conducted by Pavel Kogan on October 29, 1999 at the
Massey Theatre, New Westminster, B.C. It has since become one of my most
frequently performed works for orchestra. It was choreographed as a pas de
deux by James Kudelka for the National Ballet of Canada, and was danced by Rex
Harrington and Xiao Nan Yu at the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards Gala
at the National Arts Centre, Ottawa, November 4, 2000.
